Melanin: Black History Month Issue

Published in VZSN Magazine

I started 2020 with such a huge accomplishment, I was finally a published photographer! I submitted a photoshoot I did back in December with the lovely models Ademola and Genevieve who traveled all the way to Miami from Ohio. Ademola reached out to me through Instagram interested in booking a photoshoot. I was so excited to work with models who found me from across the map. The day of we met in a park in Miami and as I was setting up all of my backdrops and props were falling over from the strong winds, I looked like such a klutz in the park ! It was not a good start, but as soon as they arrived their energy turned my day around. Ademola brought his styling skills while Genevive did her own hair and makeup and looked stunning. It was a perfect day, the sunset created a beautiful backlight as you see in the cover photo and Genevieve and Ademola knew how to work every angle.

After finishing reviewing and editing the photos I became inspired to submit to a magazine, which was my first time submitting. I came across VZSN Magazine online and saw that they were taking submissions for their February Black History Month Issue: Melanin. I took a leap of faith and submitted, immediately after I got the email saying Congratulations! You’ve been accepted!” A month later, the day the magazine was going to be published, I received exciting news… Not only did our photoshoot get published but we got the front cover, full spread, and back page! Genevieve and Ademola couldn’t believe they were on the front page of a magazine, it was also their first magazine publishing! Here’s a preview to the magazine:

Words from the Photographer:

“Ademola brought his Nigerian culture to the photoshoot with African patterned hats and colorful clothes. Genevieve modeled a beautiful hand crafted bag by Ciela Handmade. Besides bringing fashionable, thrifted wardrobe, Ademola and Genevieve brought their bright personalities and creative minds all the way from Ohio. What really made the shoot so amazing was the way they moved, they would get in a groove and dance as I captured the magic. It was amazing seeing all of our creative visions come to life. Sometimes we forget who we are and where we come from, but Ademola and Genevieve brought who they really are. Their soulful energy shined throughout the photoshoot while being surrounded by nature. “
